Comfort in the Final Hours From AP reports The headline read "Cat seems to know when facility’s residents will die." The story described Oscar the cat report, who resides in the third-floor dementia unit at Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Providence, R.I. The staff noticed that Oscar would make his own rounds, just like the doctors and nurses. He’d observe patients, then would sit beside those who would wind up dying in a few hours. Apparently Oscar is “not a cat that’s friendly to people,” being generally aloof most of the time. However, after Oscar made more than a dozen correct calls, doctors pointed out he was better at predicting death than the people who work there.

As a side note: doctors say that most of the people who get a visit from the sweet-faced cat are so ill they probably don’t know he’s there, so patients aren’t aware he’s a harbinger of death. If anything, he brings them comfort in their final hours. Uncanny. Lovely. "Comfort in the Final Hours" (2008)
